Could carbon fibre be a suitable material for a cutting board?
No. By its nature, the fibres would be exposed in use and so allow the ingress of moisture bacteria, etc., into the board’s structure. Unless the board were made using a high-pressure infusion system so that the bonding resin excused all air and filled all the minute cavities, it would not be suitable. This would be an expensive way to manufacture it and somewhat of overkill on its design. It might have some possible uses, though.
How unsafe and dangerous are cars made out of carbon fibre?
Carbon fibre is not dangerous in itself. It has different properties to steel, and I guess if you start grinding or otherwise making little bits of carbon fibre fly about, but no worse the glass fibre (used in Corvette and many other cars, as well as boats and other watercraft for many years). Formula one cars and many parts of MotoGP bikes are made from carbon fibre. They do not explode or break apart (they sometimes catch fire or break apart in a crash, but that’s not regular use, and you have precisely the same problem with cars and motorcycles built from just about any material).
The main reason cars aren’t made of carbon fibre is that it costs way more than pressing steel or aluminum into car body panels. It is even worse to assemble chassis and suspension components that need complex shapes in three dimensions with a lot of material to be strong.
Carbon fibre can be harmful because it can lead to a stress fracture later on if there is some impact. But this is also not that different from other materials used. Steel isn’t that bad. Aluminum does not lake being creased or bent, especially if it’s also vibrating, so best not do that. But these are problems that happen from impact (collisions, bottoming out suspension, etc.) and would only be a problem on crucial components such as the mainframe of the chassis or suspension components that perform vital aspects of holding the wheels on the car. These probably need a bit of extra safety around them to avoid them being in the “contact zone”, and owners of such vehicles would have to be extra careful to have the car inspected for damage.
FAQ:
1. Is carbon fibre cut resistant?
Yes, carbon fiber is cut resistant.
Cutting carbon fibre with a knife is a bad idea; it can cause the blade to break, dull, or even get caught in the fibres, which results in the knife being difficult to remove.
2. Is cutting carbon fiber dangerous?
Carbon fibre cutting boards are known to be more dangerous than their counterparts because they have a higher probability of containing hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde.
