Carbon Fiber Rods and Tubes Description:

Carbon fibre rods and tubes are manufactured by pulling or wrapping carbon fibres and epoxy resin to a desired diameter/cross-section to form a densely reinforced carbon composite. Carbon fibre has unique properties making it ideal for applications ranging from aerospace to automobiles, to sporting goods.

This Carbon Fiber Rods are exceptionally straight and rigid, UV resistant, and are the ideal building material for frames, trusses and for use as reinforcing material.

Carbon fibre tubes can be used to replace aluminum or steel tubes in a wide range of projects. The Carbon fibre tube of the same weight as an aluminum or steel tube can be much stronger and lighter. This roll-wrapped carbon fibre tube is manufactured predominantly using high modulus unidirectional prepreg carbon fibre oriented to provide maximum strength in the lateral axis.

Roll wrapped carbon fibre tubes offer superior strength in general use to ‘pultruded’ tubes (which have all their fibres running in exactly the same direction.

The use of unidirectional fibres and maximum strength in the lateral axis does mean that the tube is not strong across its diameter as it is along its length so should be used in such a way as to avoid unnecessary crushing forces across the tube.

Roll Wrapping:

The phrase ‘roll wrapped’ refers to the process used to manufacture these tubes. The prepreg carbon fibre is first laid up around a mandrel in multiple layers. Once the reinforcement is in place it is spiral-wrapped with heat-shrink tape before the whole assembly is oven cured.

Carbon Fiber Tubes FAQ

1. How is the diameter of your tubes measured?
Except for pultruded tubes (diameter measured from outside), all DragonPlate tube diameters are measured from the inside of the tube (ID). To determine the approximate outside diameter, add 2x the wall thickness to the ID measurement.

2. What finish options do you offer for your tubes?
Finish options include gloss, natural, textured, and tooled, depending on tube type. Please see each tube type for finish options. We also offer a sanded finish upon request. Contact us for more details.

3. How do you recommend cutting DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes? Is there any safety gear that I should use?
DragonPlate carbon fiber tubes are pre-cut to the specified lengths or slightly oversized. The tubes are easily cut to length using a bandsaw, coping saw, or Dremel tool. Recommended precautions include wearing safety glasses, a dust respirator, and protective clothing when cutting, sanding or drilling, to limit exposure to the dust, which is an irritant.
